This was supposed to be a 30 minute tempo day.  I was pushing a stroller so my time was slow.  My left knee and right outer quad were giving me problems.

Dose anyone have answers to my questions about stroller pushing & running?  Check out this link from my other blog...

I had to wake up at 4:40 am today to get the run in while children were sleeping so I didn't have to push the stroller.

I had one of those non sleep nights because I kept thinking and dreaming about waking up in a couple hours.  Here is the condensed version of my never ending running anxiety dream:

Woke up at 1:30am.  It was still light out.  We were in Southern Utah.  We went to a gas station.  Met up with several other runners from Michigan who couldn't sleep because of the bright sun in the West.  We were at the starting line for a 1/2 marathon trail run.  I met Amber (from the blog.  She must have been in my dream b/c I just read her blog two days ago.  I've never met her in person).  The gun went off and I realized I didn't have my shoes on.  I had to run back to the gas station, put them on and come back.  By this time everyone was gone and I didn't know where to go.  Someone tried to sketch the course.  I was running with a piece of paper with a pseudo map on it.  I then ran through buildings and down hallways of a big church.  I realized I was running in my underwear and got really embarrassed.  Luckily, the people at the church were putting on a play and they had a dirndl (traditional german dress) with a tear in it that they let me wear.  I kept running with the dirndl on and was stopped at a bunch of clutter.  I dug through the clutter and found the original Declaration of Independence and then hit a wall blocking my path.  I gave the Declaration of Independence to an old lady with glasses and then kept looking for a way to finish the run.  I looked out the window and saw a couple of familiar faces playing leap frog across several fountains.  I met up with them and traded the 1/2 gallon of full fat vitamin D milk I was carrying for a 1/2 gallon of skim milk.  (Where was the water?)  I was relieved to know that at least I found the trail.

I guess the run this morning went well in spite of the restless sleep and running anxiety dream.  The dream actually was helpful because it distracted me for at least the first two miles of our run.  Hopefully, I'll get better sleep tonight for the long run tomorrow.

Aubree had a brilliant idea of running 3-4 mile courses looping back at the house.  My husband set up an "aide" station on the front porch- a cooler filled with Gatorade, water, Gu, and wash cloths on top.  He also watch 5 children while we ran.  Isn't he amazing?!!  It did help him though that the run was durning naptime/quiet time...also the hottest time of the day!  I've never sweat so much! But we had to get our run in no matter what and we didn't have to push the strollers. :0  Felt pretty good. Not too sore.  The salt tablets helped.  LOOKING FORWARD TO A LONG SUNDAY NAP!

A RUN DOWN MEMORY LANE

My brother, Doug, and I ran up the familiar Wing Lake Road to Echo to the back side of Andover High School's baseball fields.  Most of my 16 siblings ran track and/or cross country at Andover.  This is a beautiful course on historic dirt roads that was a regular route in high school.  Doug is 11 years older than me.  We both ran this course during different eras.  I enjoyed running it with him today and reminiscing our own experiences and memories on the course.

Doug and I decided to go inside the gym and take a look at the record board.  Some of my other siblings have since been bumped off the board.  My 5k PR of 20:12 was still up there.  I could have sworn it was 20:04.  (Isn't if funny that I can remember some of my PRs from YEARS ago?  It's like remembering a birthdate or something).  Only two more places until I'm bumped off the board also.  Funny!  Doug wondered why his 5k time (16:20) was not up on the board.  Oh well.  Another brother, Mike, still holds the record for the 5k (15:43) and some relay records.

All 17 of us graduated from this high school.  That is a record that should be up on the record board!

You have to multi-task when you are literally a mom on the run.  It cracked me up that Aubree was taking calls about selling her car on Craigslist while pushing a stroller and running up the repeat hills!  I took a turn with the stroller up the hill and it was painful.  I think I would rather run at 4am or in the hottest part of the day.  I need to rethink the stroller pushing goal.

Also, I always stay up late trying to get "caught up" on all of my many tasks.  I think if I start tracking my sleep though, it may motivate me to get to bed early.

CREEKY KNEES

I was reminded of my grandpa when I started the run this morning.  He would always give himself a pep talk when getting out of his lazy boy chair saying something like..."come on old man, you can do it"... "come on knees" ... while huffing and puffing.  After an exerted effort, he would somehow get out of that chair.  I felt the same way this morning during a tempo run.  My pep talk went something like this: "Come on knees, come on hips, loosen up.  You can do it.  Warm up legs." I then imagined myself as the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz getting oiled up.  The positive self talk I learned from my grandpa really helps.  I felt strong and loose after about 1 mile.

This workout was supposed to be 6 miles.  We had scheduling conflicts and only had time for 3.5 at the track.  I'm not sure exactly what my average pace was because neither Aubree nor I wore a watch.  Although it was not the workout I planned, I guess making any effort to run today was "better 'N nuttin."

My bib number was switched and some of the results on the website are incorrect.  (I have pictures to prove it).  Anyway, the website has me listed as running a 2:10! I crossed the line at the same time as my sister's friend who got 1:50:32.  So I'm going by that time.  Made my goal + PR!  :)  We did a lot of walking up the hills, but tried to make up for it on the flat and down part.  I felt strong and could have kept going.

This was a fun coarse.  It started up Emigration Canyon.  Beautiful scenery, loved that the sun was at our backs the entire race.  Running past Dog Park, Hogel Zoo, This Is The Place Heritage Park, and The Moran Eye Center brought back lots of memories.  We ran past the SLC cemetery where my grandparents are buried.  Then we ran by the home that my grandpa built in the 1930s and lived in until 2001.  Thinking about fun memories at these landmarks kept me going.  I also enjoyed doing a race with Mark, Paul, Cheryl, and Suz!

One kind of funny/gross thing that happened.  I shared a salt tablet with my sister's friend, Kelly.  I accidentally threw my other salt tab in the garbage with my water cup.  It fell in a cup in some stranger's backwash.  I stuck my hand in the trash and ate the salt tab anyway!!

I'm not sure how many miles I did today.  We cross trained by hiking.  I thought we were going to go on a nice leisurely stroll but ended up HIKING for SEVEN HOURS up Bells Canyon with family and children.  We drank most of the water the first two hours of the hike and then had to ration the last 20 ounces for the next five hours between 4 people.  My husband and I gave almost all of the water to our children.  The large cherry limeade from Sonic after the hike never tasted so good!

I didn't pack hiking shoes on this trip and Old Faithful shoes took a beating today.  I may have to retire them sooner than expected.

I tried to do a tempo on the treadmill.  There is no cheating with a treadmill unless you jump to the side.  (I jumped to the side 3x b/c I felt the peanut butter starting to come up).  I'm not use to the treadmill but I'll give it another chance.

Can you believe I did 17 miles on a TREADMILL!!?  I didn't think it was possible.  It's amazing what you can do when you have no choice...weather, no running partner, bla, bla, bla.

I averaged 9 min pace for the first few miles.  i ran 1 mile up hill (7.0) at 10 min. pace.  I then ran at 8:30 pace.  I pushed it a little at the end 8:00 pace for a couple of miles.  Then my friend called to say they would be at our home in a few hours.  So I finished the last couple miles at 7:30 pace so I could get home faster to clean my house!

Will I ever have time for stretching and strength training?

3.5 mile warm up outside.

10x800m on the treadmill at 3:20 (9.0).

This was more mentally challenging for me than physically challenging.  Does anyone know any mind games to trick myself on how far I am actually running?

10!! 800's on the treadmill??? I ran an hour on the treadmill once. I ran off it a few times... lucky to be alive. I play games with the speed/pace when I run TM. I do ladders, stairs, pyramids, progeressive, etc. Maybe whistling might help!?

I LOVE TAPPERING!

I think I may have been a little too easy on myself today.  2 mile warm up.  6x400m hill repeats.  I cut 3 of the repeats short to 200m.  I didn't time my splits either. Oh well, it was GORGEOUS OUT and I could smell the fresh donuts from the cider mill!

This was the first run I felt sick!  I was supposed to run 12 miles, but cut it short b/c I was so nauseated.  I came in for a bathroom break and never went back out to finish.  This was the first time I've felt this way the entire season.  Hopefully, I will be back to normal on Monday.

Pushed the stroller (pace ave 11:00) after library class.  Preschool On The Go makes me really happy.  We ran through Cranbrook (AKA Hogwarts), up hills, through construction zones, saw animals, and trees.  This real world exposure is better than Montessori for the little ones and I get to run at the same time!

I DID IT!

I accomplished all my goals! ... #1 to finish the race feeling well and happy, #2 to get a PR, and #3 to qualify for Boston.

Sleep:  This is an area that I really need to work on.  I'm embarrassed to admit how little sleep I get on a regular basis -especially the week of the race.  I only averaged 5 hours of sleep/night the week before the race.  (It didn't really help that we had to drive across the country either, but that is another story).  Mark was determined that he did not want to ride the bus up the canyon on race morning.  We stayed in Pine Valley with Aubree, her mom, and siblings.  Thanks Lisa for the extra couple of hours of sleep!

Nutrition: I ate two plates of the pasta dinner the night before at the Expo.  Race morning- I ate a half a banana & 1/2 a yogart before the race.  (I probably could have eaten more, but this was my own fault for not going grocery shopping.  Thank you Lisa for sharing your food with me!)  I took 2 Advil and 1 salt tab.  I packed 2 energy gels and a couple more Advil & salt tabs for the race.  Luckily, I was able to grab one more Gu at one of the aide stations.  I needed this extra boost.  I'm not really sure what I took when during the race.  I do remember just emptying my pockets around mile 21 and eating anything that was left.  I drank water at every stop and Gatorade at a few of them, however, Gatorade can make me feel a little nauseous.

Race: I took a total of 17 short walking breaks and 5 long breaks during the race. Here are my splits.

8:29, 8:14, 7:59, 7:23, 7:44, 7:18, 7:25, 8:50 (vejo hill), 8:54 (long aid station/bathroom break), 8:42, 8:36, 8:15, 8:28, 7:57, 7:33, 8:04, 7:45, 8:10, 8:32, 8:33, 8:09, 9:02 (Mile 22 is the real half-way mark.  My legs started to feel like lead.  I kept telling myself, "I can make it to the next mile... It's just like Echo & back (a favorite easy coarse), ", 8:43, 7:57, 8:39, 8:38.  Overall pace average:  8:13

I really did love the race!  I didn't put any pressure on myself.  Rather, I focused on "good running karma." Definition:  1) Appreciating everything around me - the scenery, the people who came out to cheer, my health, clean air... 2) thanking all the people at the water/aide stations-especially thanking all the people who rubbed Icy Hot on my legs at almost every aide station.  (They really went the extra mile for that)!  3) Trying really hard not to accidently throw my cups at people or the volunteers.  (I think this only happened once).  4) going out of my way to slap hands with the little kids who were cheering.  (If there was a group of kids, I always picked the smallest one).  5) dancing when I heard the live music and radio music along the way.

The people on the race inspired me.  I teared up when I saw a man push his physically disabled son in a wheel chair.  I teared up a few more times during the race seeing some of the work that took place to make this event possible.  I really got choked up with American pride hearing that another man ran the entire race carrying an American flag and then was humbled running the last few hundred meters with US soldiers cheering everyone on.  In my heart, I was cheering them on.  I finished the race with a big smile on my face.  My overall emotions, were happiness from a sense of accomplishment and deep gratitude to the Lord, Mark, Aubree, my children, Cheryl, Suz, and everyone else who helped me.  I couldn't have done this alone.  Thank you everyone!
