6x800.  windy.  I tricked my mind into believing that the wind against me was cooling me off and helping me run faster.

This was supposed to be a 30 minute tempo day.  I was pushing a stroller so my time was slow.  My left knee and right outer quad were giving me problems.

Dose anyone have answers to my questions about stroller pushing & running?  Check out this link from my other blog...

I had to wake up at 4:40 am today to get the run in while children were sleeping so I didn't have to push the stroller.

I had one of those non sleep nights because I kept thinking and dreaming about waking up in a couple hours.  Here is the condensed version of my never ending running anxiety dream:

Woke up at 1:30am.  It was still light out.  We were in Southern Utah.  We went to a gas station.  Met up with several other runners from Michigan who couldn't sleep because of the bright sun in the West.  We were at the starting line for a 1/2 marathon trail run.  I met Amber (from the blog.  She must have been in my dream b/c I just read her blog two days ago.  I've never met her in person).  The gun went off and I realized I didn't have my shoes on.  I had to run back to the gas station, put them on and come back.  By this time everyone was gone and I didn't know where to go.  Someone tried to sketch the course.  I was running with a piece of paper with a pseudo map on it.  I then ran through buildings and down hallways of a big church.  I realized I was running in my underwear and got really embarrassed.  Luckily, the people at the church were putting on a play and they had a dirndl (traditional german dress) with a tear in it that they let me wear.  I kept running with the dirndl on and was stopped at a bunch of clutter.  I dug through the clutter and found the original Declaration of Independence and then hit a wall blocking my path.  I gave the Declaration of Independence to an old lady with glasses and then kept looking for a way to finish the run.  I looked out the window and saw a couple of familiar faces playing leap frog across several fountains.  I met up with them and traded the 1/2 gallon of full fat vitamin D milk I was carrying for a 1/2 gallon of skim milk.  (Where was the water?)  I was relieved to know that at least I found the trail.

I guess the run this morning went well in spite of the restless sleep and running anxiety dream.  The dream actually was helpful because it distracted me for at least the first two miles of our run.  Hopefully, I'll get better sleep tonight for the long run tomorrow.

Aubree had a brilliant idea of running 3-4 mile courses looping back at the house.  My husband set up an "aide" station on the front porch- a cooler filled with Gatorade, water, Gu, and wash cloths on top.  He also watch 5 children while we ran.  Isn't he amazing?!!  It did help him though that the run was durning naptime/quiet time...also the hottest time of the day!  I've never sweat so much! But we had to get our run in no matter what and we didn't have to push the strollers. :0  Felt pretty good. Not too sore.  The salt tablets helped.  LOOKING FORWARD TO A LONG SUNDAY NAP!

A RUN DOWN MEMORY LANE

My brother, Doug, and I ran up the familiar Wing Lake Road to Echo to the back side of Andover High School's baseball fields.  Most of my 16 siblings ran track and/or cross country at Andover.  This is a beautiful course on historic dirt roads that was a regular route in high school.  Doug is 11 years older than me.  We both ran this course during different eras.  I enjoyed running it with him today and reminiscing our own experiences and memories on the course.

Doug and I decided to go inside the gym and take a look at the record board.  Some of my other siblings have since been bumped off the board.  My 5k PR of 20:12 was still up there.  I could have sworn it was 20:04.  (Isn't if funny that I can remember some of my PRs from YEARS ago?  It's like remembering a birthdate or something).  Only two more places until I'm bumped off the board also.  Funny!  Doug wondered why his 5k time (16:20) was not up on the board.  Oh well.  Another brother, Mike, still holds the record for the 5k (15:43) and some relay records.

All 17 of us graduated from this high school.  That is a record that should be up on the record board!

You have to multi-task when you are literally a mom on the run.  It cracked me up that Aubree was taking calls about selling her car on Craigslist while pushing a stroller and running up the repeat hills!  I took a turn with the stroller up the hill and it was painful.  I think I would rather run at 4am or in the hottest part of the day.  I need to rethink the stroller pushing goal.

Also, I always stay up late trying to get "caught up" on all of my many tasks.  I think if I start tracking my sleep though, it may motivate me to get to bed early.

CREEKY KNEES

I was reminded of my grandpa when I started the run this morning.  He would always give himself a pep talk when getting out of his lazy boy chair saying something like..."come on old man, you can do it"... "come on knees" ... while huffing and puffing.  After an exerted effort, he would somehow get out of that chair.  I felt the same way this morning during a tempo run.  My pep talk went something like this: "Come on knees, come on hips, loosen up.  You can do it.  Warm up legs." I then imagined myself as the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz getting oiled up.  The positive self talk I learned from my grandpa really helps.  I felt strong and loose after about 1 mile.

4.3 miles ave 8:07 pace.

This workout was supposed to be 6 miles.  We had scheduling conflicts and only had time for 3.5 at the track.  I'm not sure exactly what my average pace was because neither Aubree nor I wore a watch.  Although it was not the workout I planned, I guess making any effort to run today was "better 'N nuttin."

I ran the first three miles with my neighbor.  I went inside, grabbed the ipod, ate breakfast then started running again.  It was my first time with the ipod and I felt like I could have run forever.  I did a couple laps around the neighborhood and was back by 8:00am.  Now I just need to figure out how to change the songs.

I started my road trip across the country today.  I know I didn't run, but it still felt like a workout alone in the car with two children.  I drove 10 hours and made it to Des Moines.
