COMING OUT OF HIBERNATION

The snow has finally melted and new buds of Spring are popping up everywhere.  It's time to start running again.

Mark and I were asked to be Ma & Pa for trek.  Today was the Trek Qaulifying walk/run - 4 miles in one hour.  This was a huge reality check!  I finished in 40 minutes pushing the jogger and felt my lungs burning the entire time.  (I got the look from some of the teenagers like "I hope she isn't my Ma and make me run with a handcart like she is with that stroller).  I'm definitly starting from scratch again.  But it felt SO GOOD to be OUTSIDE AGAIN!

PACK RUNNING with SISTERS

I can't think of a better activity to do with my sisters.  We met in Utah for Cheryl's 40th surprise b-day party.   Cheryl & Suz are in their tappering mode for Ogden.  Becca and I are just starting up again.  A 7 mile trail run was perfect for all.  I didn't notice the altitude.  We took it easy, enjoying the beautiful scenery rivers, mountains, trees, and each other's company.

(I need to work on my sleeping...we stayed up until 3am talking and stretching).

Also bought two new pairs of shoes.  I'm getting geared up for summer training.

This was an easy coarse on dirt roads, yet my lungs were burning from the cold misty wind and rain.  I definitely felt the change in time-zone and climate.  I wore a hat and ski gloves!  Isn't this May?  At least Kate was warm in the Chariot cocoon.  David road his bike next to me. We stopped half way to meet up with Mark and Gunner at the tennis courts to hits some balls for our FHE activity.

2.5 mile warm up. 6x400. 2.5 mile cool down.  swimming.  (Door to door this took us 2.5 hours).

My splits were consistently 1:39 or 1:40.  This is my regular split for 800s and should have been faster since I was only doing 400s.  Speed has never been my strength.  However, I'm like the tortoise with consistency and endurance.  I guess that is kind of like my personality too.  I feel much better making small, consistent strides towards my goals as opposed to the craziness I feel when life starts moving so fast that I forget what my goals were in the first place.

I had a great time running with my family tonight.  I pushed Kate in the stroller, Mark held Gunner on the leash, and David rode along side with his bike.  We ran into my middle school gym teacher and a wrestling coach of two of my older brothers.  Small world.

Mark and I switched off running the 400s and keeping an eye on the kids.  They entertained themselves most of the time on the bleachers and in the tires on the field.  It kind of felt like a road trip.  I could hear the intermittent, "MOM!" echo across the field.   They kept asking, "When are you going to be done?" and I had to stop to help Kate pee on the side of the bleachers.  I didn't come as prepared on this run as a road trip though.  Next run I will need TP, wipes, plastic baggies, and snacks.

We finished the cool down at the lake and all spontaneously jumped in water with clothes and all.  I got a second workout helping Kate swim out to the dock while hanging on to a little floaty.  The image of my husband and kids as silhouettes against the moon reflecting off the lake just as the sun had set was pretty neat and will leave a lasting picture in my mind.  You can't beat summer nights and memories like this.

I didn't get much sleep going to bed around midnight and then having to get up at 3:45am to carpool to the High School for the bus pick up.

As you can see from my calendar, I pretty much ran this race cold with not great preparation or training.  Luckily, I still got a PR and didn't get injured!  It was a fast course and beautiful!

The fact that Suz, Becca, Cheryl, and I got matching tanks, sparkly headbands, and matching sock sleeves made it even more fun.  I ran with Cheryl and Paul the whole way.

My favorite comment was during the steepest part of the course when Suz screamed "bowling ball coming through!" and plowed through a group of people completely out of control.

This was a great half.  I would do it again.

We ran the first 13 miles up hill.  Cheryl lost her cell phone and we back tracked a couple of miles before we found it in the High School bathroom.  We were planning on running 22 miles but had to cut it short because I called my mother-in-law at mile 14 and she was pretty irritated with me that I was going to be a few minutes late.  Cheryl and I ran faster at pace for the next four miles and then tempo for the last.

Hey, great run! For the bathroom I'll tell you what I tell everyone. Hold it in! You can go 8 hours straight of holding it in while your asleep! Why not while you're awake???

I had to cut this run 4 miles short because I slept in.  I'm still a little jet-lagged from my "Western" trip.

knees tight.  I have to still work on the bathroom breaks...

Also, I haven't been grocery shopping in over a month.  The only thing I could think of to eat mid-run was a can of pears.  I guess that is better than nothing.

According to the Garmin, I ran 26.3 miles in 3:42:58.  The only thing I can figure is that our chip time was started with the wheel chair race as they were starting when we put our bags in the UPS truck.  Oh well... here are our splits according to our watch:  I finally figured out what went wrong with the time.  The watch was set to autostop!  It gave me a false sense of pace and time.

 THE BAD:

The course was not a favorite.  The first half was pretty with rolling hills, yet the second half was straight roads uphill through town. The website advertises net loss (1452 ft) but does not tell you net gain.  (ascent- 2493 ft; descent- 3945) No clock at halfway point or at the end!  No icy hot.  Very few spectators.  Cold at beginning-didn't warm up until 1/2 way.  only 600 marathoners- not a lot of energy.  soft stomach with one bathroom break mid-run and 5+ after the race.  The BIG KILL JOY was hearing that our time was 3 minutes slower than what we thought according to the watch. still trying to figure that one out.

 THE GOOD:

The swag bag was great- potatos, t-shirt, duffle bag!  Comfortable bus ride.  Real rec center bathrooms at beginning and end.  Lots of water/Powerade & three extra energy gels. Good food at the end.  Running with Cheryl.  Paul joined us at the half with fresh legs. Good running outfits.  BQ qualifying for both of us.  (Cheryl giving me an ipad for running with her!)  Get to spend a weekend in Driggs, Idaho.

Even though I did not run today, I experienced more "race nerves" than I've had in years registering for Boston.  The new registration procedure was kind of intimidating for me.  Then when I looked at the elite, world-class runners who were already registered, I felt the pre-race jitters and had to run to the bathroom.  I registered for Boston but do not get confirmation for a few days if I was accepted.  BAA, please save some space for the slower runners like myself!

7.000.000.000.000.000.000.007.00

It was a beautiful/cold fall morning.  I just HAD to get out and run.  Mark asked how many miles I was going.  I replied, "until I get out all of my energy."  It felt so liberating not running with a watch or even a plan.  I just let my legs take me without thinking while I listened to the ipod.  After 4 or five miles, I was about to make a turn to go home, but then decided to keep going.  I ran to Julie's grave.  I stretched a little against her headstone thinking about all the people in the cemetery and the fact that they completed their mission in life.  I thought about the run for cancer we did in Julie's honor.  I thought about all the other runs with a cause.  Then the thought came to me.  Why not have a "Run for Happiness."  If people focused on being happy then at the very least it will help them weather the storms of whatever they are facing.  I believe focusing on happiness can even heal physical illnesses or ailments.  I daydreamed about planning this race, what the shirts & metals would look like, music at the start and end, special guests, freebies and all.  I thought that maybe I could plan a course at the farm.  It is fun to dream...

I kept running.  It has been exactly a year since I ran the St. George marathon.  I reflected on ALL that has happened in this last year.  Too much to list here right now.  I also thought of Suz and the fact that she was running the marathon right then.  I kind of felt like I was running next to her and cheering her on through the cosmos of space.

I stopped by Karen's house.  I needed to call her back, but decided to run there instead.  She didn't answer the door.  She admitted that she didn't want to answer the door to an unexpected person in black running tights and a hat.  I probably wouldn't have either.  Luckily, she realized it was me and we had a fun time catching up.

I'm not exactly sure how far I went- guessing 7 to 9 miles.  I felt like I could have run for another hour at least.  Karen drove me home though.  I'm glad I got to spend time with her and the kids at the play ground.  One more great thing...Karen said I could have her treadmill!

It was nice just plain running today with no agenda.

I run with a headlamp in the mornings.  It is so dark that sometimes it's even hard to see a couple steps ahead.  Perfect temperature - 47 degrees.  Kimberly and I did a kind of hilly course.  I guess that is one advantage for running in the dark...you don't realize you are running up or down a hill until it is almost over.

I did not feel like running this morning, but am always so glad I did even if it was only 3 miles.  The moon looked so cool this morning!  I'm not sure how many more beautiful days we will have.  Got to make the most of it.

I've been enjoying running merely for the fun of it.  I'm still debating when to start "training." Any ideas?

Franklin loop in the rain.  Ran with Gunner today.  He did pretty well.  Maybe this dog will be a good running partner after all.

I've had 2 months of EASY/NO running.  I now need to kick it up a notch through the winter.  I'm starting week one of another marathon training program.

Gunner is a great name. What kind of dog?

He's a German Short-haired Pointer with LOTS of energy!

Ran outside. Echo repeats.  Had to cut it short to come home.  The cold air burns my lungs during tempo runs, but it was sunny and you have to make the most of any sunshine especially as we get closer to winter.  I also am waiting as long as possible before I am forced to join a gym.

I checked "easy" only because my pace average was slow - 9.38.  It felt hard though running with Gunner.  All that constant jerking, peeing, pooping is exhausting!  It doesn't feel great on my back or knees either.  I've decided I can't take him on tempo runs anymore.  I can only take him on "junk" runs.
