Marathon Training DAY 1

800 warm up.  4x800 @10-K - 45 to 50 seconds.    800 cool down.

This work out was so insane with running on 3 inches of snow and bringing 8 young children and 1 teenager with us!

I didn't track my shoe miles because I ran in SNOW BOOTs!

GOAL - 5 mile tempo 7:30 pace

ACTUAL - 1 mile slow, 3 miles a little faster, 1 mile medium pace.  Overall time 47 minutes.  Pace average 9+ (don't feel like figuring it out exactly right now).

Anyway, I can only improve from here.  It was fun running with Mark.

Sleep- was NOT continuous. Kate woke up 3 times last night!

Franklin loop 2x with wool socks and SNOW GoGGLES!  This may change my winter running forever!  Temp 8 degrees with windchill and 2-3 inches of snow.  The up hill was more slippery than down.  My chin froze.

At least today Puxatony Phil predicted an early spring! Saw a HawK eating a dead squirrel on top of a blanket of snow.  He gave us the "Hawk Eye" then flew above our heads continuing to eye us until we ran past.  A about 2 miles later on our return, this same hawk saw us coming, picked up the squirrel with his TALONS gave us the look AS IF we wanted some of his pickings and flew away.  It was actually pretty cool to have an up close encounter with a hawk.

Aubree and I spent almost just as much time trying to figure out what to wear for this race as we did training!  The alien costumes just weren't going to happen.  Spring marathons are always a gamble.  Last year in Boston it was 90 degrees!  I guess I was thinking this marathon would be warm also because it is the same weekend as Boston.  However, it was the complete opposite!  In fact, the night before, there was so much FREEZING RAIN that the course had to be re-routed in and around neighborhoods.  I didn't figure that out until mile 5 when I saw a mile marker that said something like 5, 12, 18.  What!?  Were we swimming laps in a pool?!  I had to ask the people around me because I was totally confused.

Finally the night before I figured I'd just wear what I've worn all winter during training - Ski socks, long pants, hat, gloves, a tank, long-sleeved t-shirt, and a think outer layer.  I did actually put on running shoes instead of snow boots this time.  haha

The entire race didn't really feel like a race at all.  It felt more like a long run to me.  About mile 12, all the 10k, & half runners joined the course.  It kind of clogged up the roads and I had to play frogger most of the time to get past people.   This is where Aubree and I split up and she pulled ahead.

I can't remember what I did as far as nutrition.  I really like the Honey Stingers.  I actually drank Gatorade this time.  GU is harder and harder for me to swallow.  I spent 2 miles slowly getting one down and then drank water.  I packed cough drops to suck on, Advil, and a couple salt tabs.  I really wished there was hot chocolate at the aid stations to warm my lungs.  Mile 18 - COLD with wind and freezing rain again.  This let up a little around mile 20.

All the sweat and cold air after the race caused my lips to turn purple and teeth to chatter a little.  Aubree and I along with all of the kids crammed in my little Civic at the finish line to stay warm while David and Addy ran the kids 1 mile.  I was proud of those guys.  They trained hard.

Overall, I enjoyed this race.  I really was not "racing."  I ran at a comfortable pace, took long water breaks and tied my shoes a few times.  The only split I saw was my 1/2 at 1:50.  Like I've said in the past, I'm a baby and don't like to breath hard or feel a lot of pain.  About 2/3rds into the race, a woman next to me asked me what my goal time was and I responded, "I don't know, what's yours."  She answered 3:45 and I said that sounds good.  It felt good running just for the sake of running with NO PRESSURE.  I was pleased with my time.

I'm writing this report a little after the fact... My perspective has changed since the recent events in Boston.  Running a marathon seemed to lose significance when I thought of all those people in Boston who were affected and whose lives were changed forever.  I also thought of Becca, Cheryl, and I standing in that same location last year cheering on finishing runners.  I felt so much gratitude that my friends and family were OK, yet heart ache for others.  I felt gratitude that I ran this cold/unrecognized marathon in Dearborn this weekend as opposed to Boston.

Now I'm feeling like the only way I can fight back insanity like that is to really train hard and get a better time to make sure I can get into Boston next year to support the runners and families who were affected this year.

Ran "easy" but it felt hard.  Not sure if it is the humidity or this detox.  Aubree ran an extra mile than me pushing a stroller with two kids!

Felt horrible.  Had to take tons of walking breaks!  Legs felt like lead.  I had a constant dull pain around my heart/lungs.  Ran on an empty stomach from a week of minimal calories from the detox.  NOT Smart!  Spent the day in bed recovering.  Never doing that again!

Aubree and I ran the first 4 a little under 9min pace.  The last 3 miles were at 8:26.  I met at her house at 6am.  The sun was rising.  No need for a headlamp and the temperature was perfect around 64!  We finished the run with a few rain drops!  I felt GREAT!  What a difference from Saturdays run!  NUTRITION plays a HUGE role for me in how I feel!

This is how I remember my running schedule by day of the week:

Sunday - Sabbath/Rest

Monday - Mental health run/ Easy

Tuesday - Training/ Speed

Wednesday - West/ Rest pronounced with a /w/

Thursday - Training/ pace

Friday - Fun/ light and easy

Saturday - Steady/ long

This was supposed to be a hill workout.  Here is what actually happened.

Attempts at a training run with Aubree Hunter, 6 kids, 4 bikes, and a double stroller. Goal 8 miles. Actual 5 miles with a few stops -first stop - the Enrollment office to register kids for school. A couple crashes, two popped tires, a few scraped knees, and tears. The second break was needed to raise morale - Market Basket for pizza and then the Farmhouse for ice-cream. Next, we saw all the neighbors in Mr. Rogers Neighborhood - the firemen, the garbage man, the mailman, & the delivery truck...Lastly, we stopped to pick and eat crabapples. I'm not sure it was much of a run but it was an adventure for sure!

At least we are trying.  I'm giving us an A for Effort on this run!

This was a really FUN run.  Aubree and I ran all over town.  Instead of GU I packed my debit card and we stopped at Kroger, Booth Park, Einstein's, and Trader Joes for our energy breaks. I figure that a GU is about 1 penny per calorie.  I got a better value buying oranges, banannas, and bagels on the go.  Plus, it was nice to eat REAL FOOD.

4x400 at max 5 miles easy.  I think I pushed the 400x too hard.  My legs were almost immediately sore.  But i couldn't complain watching Aubree do repeat 800s and 1600s in the same amount of time as i ran slow around the track.
